England crossed the 800-run mark in the first Test against Pakistan in Multan and set a new record in the history of Test cricket. This feat was achieved by a team for the first time in the last 27 years. During this, Harry Brook performed brilliantly and scored a triple century, and he became the sixth English batsman to achieve this feat. Brook scored 317 runs in just 322 balls, which was the second fastest triple century in the history of Test cricket. He also pointed towards Brian Lara’s record of 400 runs, but eventually he was out on 317 runs. Joe Root was also moving towards a triple century, but in the post-lunch session, a ball from Agha Salman got him LBW and Root returned to the pavilion on 262 runs. There was a partnership of 454 runs between Root and Brook, which is the fourth largest partnership in the history of Test cricket. England declared at 823/7 in their first innings, giving them a lead of 267 runs over Pakistan.
After lunch, England resumed play at 658/3. Brook crossed the 250 mark by hitting two fours off Saim Ayub. This was the third time in the history of Test cricket that two batsmen crossed the 250 mark in the same innings. Just when it looked like both Root and Brook would complete triple centuries, a delivery from Salman dismissed Root.
After this, Jamie Smith hit a four off the second ball as soon as he came in, while England continued the fast run-scoring pace. Brook hit a six and a four off Salman and then a six off Naseem Shah to reach close to 290. When Brook reached 300, he had played only 310 balls, second only to Virender Sehwag’s fastest triple century against South Africa in 2008. However, England soon lost a few wickets and declared, much to Pakistan’s relief.
